Suite de notre première partie que nous avons publié ici même il y a quelques jours (Les Spitfire en état de vol dans le monde en 2022: les Spitfire Mk I/II et Mk V (Partie ① )

Nous publions ici la deuxième partie consacrée aux Spitfire Mk VIII et Mk IX – les versions biplaces seront traitées dans une troisième partie.

Le Mk IX, version la plus construite avec pas moins de 5656 exemplaires fabriqués, était basée sur une cellule de Spitfire Mk V à laquelle fut greffée un moteur Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 pour contrer en urgence le Focke-Wulf Fw 190A apparu sur le front ouest à partir de 1942.

Le Spitfire Mk IX se révéla être la version la plus prolifique et de nombreuses forces aériennes utilisèrent cet avion après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale.

Sur les 70 Spitfire en état de vol à ce jour, le Mk IX est la version la plus courante avec pas moins de 20 exemplaires. A titre de comparaison, seuls deux Mk VIII sont actuellement en état de vol.
